Carving Pumpkins

Carve Away

Last night some of my neighbors and I got together to have some fun. Child like fun that is. Yes we carved pumpkins for our annual Halloween Party. There were five adults and one three year old child. We had seven pumpkins to carve and decorate so they could be set out for viewing. We all gathered at the community picnic table, laid down newspapers and looked at the sale ads of all the things we wanted to buy but cannot afford. .

The ladies in our group set out the knives, spoons, bucket for the seeds so they could be cleaned and cooked. One of the ladies had brought out a magic marker and her Halloween cookie cutters. She traced the owl cookie cutter on her pumpkin and made two eyes. The little boy who was there wanted to use the bat on a pumpkin as it was his ‘batman.’ This became the mouth of the pumpkin who had two owl eyes. The top was cut off and the insides scooped out. Once the batman and owl figures were of satisfaction to the little guy the pumpkin was ready for it’s light, so it would shine in the darkness. This pumpkin would guide all the little ‘goblins’ to the proverbial candy dish which had a mechanical hand that raised up to scare you as it’s contents were grabbed.

Our little guy did two pumpkins which were decorated with Mr. Potato Head pieces and they were adorable. We all chatted and laughed and recalled fond childhood memories of our earlier pumpkin carving days. It was difficult for some to remember how long it had been since we last partook in this childhood activity. The other pumpkins were being cut as scary faces and lit up to light the walkway to the favored candy dish. We ate doughnut holes and drank assorted beverages as we chatted and carved. Since darkness had crept into our fun and it was hard to see what we were doing a spotlight was brought out to light our way. It was placed in the center of the table and we could continue on with our project. When all the pumpkins were carved and set in place we all stood back and admired our handiwork. Everyone was pleased and happy and very glad we had decided to do this and the weather cooperated.

The carving utensils and miscellaneous were gathered up and the newspapers put in the trash can. Once everything was cleaned up a couple of the ladies went in for the night. It had gotten chilly and damp as it often does at this time of year. We talked about the food we were going to have at the Halloween party and who was going to attend. There should be a good crowd in attendance and dressing up is optional. This is my second year of attendance and I just may dress up this year. I haven’t decided what to wear yet. I am sure we will all have a wonderful time full of friends, music, food and assorted beverages. Decorating and carving the pumpkins was just a prelude to our night of fun.
